CA v. TX

This artilce is long but it is worth the read. Please read it and tell me what you think. It is comparing CA to TX, but more importantly it is comparing high-tax states to low-tax states.
I'm very interested in your thoughts.

  1. i think its hard for me to say form any real experience. since i don't consider myself a true resident or consumer of tis state. I am a full time student, i have no job. A few months ago the Economist ran a similar article where they said that the main reason people are moving to Texas and out of California is the taxes on Businesses (which especially doesn't apply to me). So as more business leave Cali, more jobs/people leave cali and so obviously, as more businesses enter texas, more jobs/people enter texas. It makes sense to me on paper.

I liked the no sales tax in Oregon but i never had to pay any of the other taxes so its hard to talk about it over all. It probably ends up a wash at that point.

  2. I think you make a good point. Business taxes are more hurtful to the state than any other tax i think. If you tax a business or make it harder for businesses to start and grow yo are only shooting yourself in the foot.

but reading your comment make me think of something else. You say you are a full time student and don't feel like you area resident or consumer of the state. I felt that way too and still do, since i don't have a real job or a place to call my own.
This makes me wonder if people without land are really a citizen of that state. I know we gave the right to vote for everyone, but doesn't it make sense that the person who has bought land has invested more of their life into that state, than for someone like you and me. I could leave oregon tomorrow. People who own land, i feel might need more of a say then what goes on the state.
Take oregon for example and the issue with property taxes. Portland, which is more liberal than the rest of the state is mostly of people renting, as is most cities. So someone who is renting really doesn't care if the tax is incresed and would actually want it to so the schools would be more funded. So those people who in the next few months after voting for the tax increase who were renters could easily leave the state and go somewhere else, but the effect of the tax would still be a burden for those who own land. just a though i like to put out there to see what you think.
