"Power never concedes anything without a demand; it never has and it never will."
Sam Adams
"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."
Here is a question. Obama recently visited Japan and bowed down to the emperor there. while our First Diplomat is visiting other countries, how far should he/she go in respecting the other country's customers at the expense of our own?
We in the US do not have special class customs. If I meet someone from the wealthy class I greet them with a hand shake like I would to anyone else. But here we have our First Citizen bowing to a foriegn power. It looks awful. I believe diplomacy is about preseption. Obama could have done other things to respect the emperor other than bowing down. The symbolism of bowing is too strong, to take lightly, I think. We pride ourselves in the idea that ALL persons are created equal, so why would Obama abandon that principle to give respect to a guy who really has no power, at such a symbolic risk?
at what expense did this come to our own customs? (poor sentence structure, i know, but i couldn't figure out a better way to phrase it)
